Aiden's IEP--Individualized Education Program Assessment
4/15/11 (age 3) "Talk-n-Learn" Assessment:
"Expressively, Aiden's skills are typical of a child at the 16 month level while his receptive skills are typical of a child <12 months of age. Aiden uses approximately 15 words." Ms. Jimenez
Fine Motor skills: 24 months
Cognition: 17-36 months (Aiden was unable to complete the LAP-D assessment due to his inability to follow directives or answer questions).
Adaptive/Self Help: 15-19 months
Social: 12 months
Gross Motor: 27-29 months
My assessment? The above means nothing to me. I'm just curious how these change over the years. From my daily assessment, Aiden is functioning at a 16-19 month level (i.e. 2 years "behind").
Aiden receives a new IEP July 13th!
July 13th 2011~
I spoke with Aiden's speech therapist today. She was very encouraging! She was impressed with Aiden's progress and the goals he met! I expressed my concern that Aiden will not receive therapy for a month and a half until Early Childhood in September. She agreed that Aiden needs constant reinforcement. I need to talk to him constantly, and label things. I feel "out of my element" doing so, but I'm trying hard!

Is this the entire IEP?? I hope not! I hope you just condensed it! If it is, it's the worst one I've ever seen! What does he do and not do socially? Based on even this one, however, there is an identified need for speech therapy in the summer and you need to request this of the schools. You must put into writing that you have not been properly informed of your rights as a parent and that your child should qualify for summer services in the area of speech! I think this is where PDD may be playing a role...he might only qualify if under autism...not sure what your state's guidelines are...you can get the state guidelines (sometimes called regs) from the state board of education. REQUEST THEM!!!! You will need them throughout his lifetime! Ask for parts A and B. Even under a speech impairment, he should receive in home summer therapy! My son did..in WI!
ReplyDeleteWe also received occupational therapy (for small motor movement). This IEP does not identify his needs for further therapy or any needs as I'm reading it now. Is this assessment theirs or yours? The assessment is lacking. If your son is on the autism spectrum, this means nothing as they do not test well and many tests do not take into account the sensory deficits that are causing him not to test well. If your speech therapist says he needs constant reinforcement, then he needs speech therapy summer services. What you will soon learn is that the squeaky wheel gets the grease! Speak up now or they will not provide what your son is entitled to under the law!
ReplyDeleteYour son should be evaluated in speech with a nonverbal assessment tool as well, such as the Leiter. The Leiter is an older test, so don't let them tell you it is outdated. It is very useful. There are others as well. Look up nonverbal developmental testing on the internet. I know all of this is overwhelming, but you need to ask for the services. Sounds like they will not be handing them out on a silver platter!
